Nitrous oxide, commonly called N₂O, is a gas that can be introduced into an engine to help it make more power.
The basic idea is simple: an engine can make more power when it has more oxygen and the correct amount of fuel available to burn.
A nitrous system introduces additional oxygen into the combustion process so the engine can support additional fuel and create more power.
An engine is basically an air pump.
It takes in air, mixes that air with fuel, compresses the mixture, and burns it.
Nitrous changes how much oxygen is available to that process.
But the key word is correctly.
The fuel, engine, system, and supporting components all need to work together.
Nitrous oxide contains oxygen. When the system is activated, the additional oxygen available to the combustion process allows the engine to support additional fuel.
The added oxygen must be matched with the appropriate amount of fuel for the specific system and application.
When the system is properly matched, installed, and tuned, the larger combustion event can increase engine output.
The goal is not simply to install the biggest system possible.
The right system is the one that works with the complete combination.
That means considering the engine, fuel system, drivetrain, tires, intended use, and power goal.
A plate installs between the throttle body or carburetor and the intake manifold. The plate distributes nitrous and, in a wet system, fuel into the intake stream. Plate systems are one of the most common ways to add nitrous to an engine.

Nozzle systems introduce nitrous into the intake system through one or more nozzles. Depending on the system design, fuel may also be introduced through the nozzle system. Nozzle systems provide flexibility when packaging the system on different vehicles and intake combinations.
